3 Water and Money Saving Devices for Your Home

Going green can seem daunting and costly. But it needn’t be a hassle or fiscally unobtainable. With a few simple household changes, you can help save the Earth and save money as well. In today’s conditions, with the economy inching along and environmental stewardship becoming more important than ever, conserving both resources and cash is increasingly necessary.
In India, water is consumed in excessive amounts, from daily hygienic routines to cooking, cleaning and maintaining our homes. On average, each Indian consumes 80 gallons of water a day – leaps and bounds more than the global average of only about three gallons per day, per person.
With the installation of water-saving devices in your home, you can conserve during your everyday activities – from getting ready for work to washing the dishes – all while cutting down on the amount of money you rack up on your monthly water bill.

Here are three ways you can make your home more eco-friendly:
  1. Water-saving toilets: Most of these toilets use only about 1.28 gallons per flush, significantly less than the 1.6 gallons per flush allowed by US regulations. But how much of a difference can only about .30 gallons per flush make? Say your bathroom toilet is flushed three times a day for a month; you would save nearly 30 gallons of water a month.
  2. Faucet aerators: Another way we can make our homes more water-conscious is by installing kitchen and bathroom aerators, which decrease the amount of flow from our faucets. An aerator, attached onto the head of an ordinary faucet, not only breaks up the single continuous stream into much smaller ones, but it also introduces extra oxygen into the stream, further decreasing the amount released. By merely attaching a faucet aerator to your sink, you can save as much as 280 gallons of water a month.

3. Low-flow shower heads: According to the Environmental Protection      Agency, more than half of water usage in the home occurs in the bathroom, making high-efficiency showerheads essential for any sustainable household. On average, about 50 gallons of water are wasted during a shower, but with a low-flow shower head, you can use as little as 15 gallons of water.

Making your home green doesn’t mean you need to break the bank. While a high-efficiency toilet can cost around $300, it’s a long-term investment that will pay off with time. Plus, faucet and shower head add-ons are inexpensive. Many companies sell aerators and other eco-friendly devices for as little as $5.
Less is truly more when it comes to water conservation. By decreasing the amount of water we use in our everyday lives, we can take the first major steps necessary to being environmentally aware, all while saving a little extra cash on the side.
